Seeing Further

Published by elricb under Science

If British science has a home, it has resided since 1967 in the elegant, Regency splendour of 6-9 Carlton House Terrace in London. This is the headquarters of the Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of science, which this year celebrates its 350th anniversary. It is a building which hums with the energy of ideas.

Obamas honeymoon is over, now to work at the marriage

Published by elricb under Politics

The rose-tinted glasses collectively donned when Barack Obama entered the White House have been removed. But, like Lyndon Johnson before him, don’t be too quick to write off a president as disappointing, writes Lisa Jardine.

Hello iPad

Published by elricb under Apple, Tech

It’s so much more intimate than a laptop and so much more capable than a smart phone

Well, the waiting is over folks, Steve Jobs finally unveiled his iPad after months nae years of fevered speculation.

iPad eh, I didn’t think it was going to be that – I had thought that the iPad was going to be some accessory device. It makes sense though, iPod – iPad! Genius.

All the good stuff is over at http://www.apple.com/ipad including the obligatory Jonny Ive video that has you wanting it so much. It sure is a purdy piece of kit, well speced and with an entry price of $499 for the WiFi 16gb version – quite bloody tempting indeed – I thought it would be so much more. Thing is, I am sure I can hold out till next year for ipad 2, twice as fast, half the cost.

The iBook App which twists round the bookshelf to reveal the iBookstore is pure Jobs – it makes you smile.

It’s a very interesting device, I would love to see how they see it fitting into the Apple eco system, how does it work with the AppleTV with your iMac anything new there? I hope so!

One more sleep…

Published by elricb under Apple, Tech

Before the release of Apple’s new product, the most vaunted and mythical Tablet device that they have presumably been working on for many years and a device that Lord Jobs has killed off at least 4 times.

But, it seems that it may be back – if Jobs does not release a Tablet device tomorrow I reckon there will be some sort of collective geek brain haemorrhage.

Steve himself dropped a hint at yesterdays roaring profits announcement:

The new products we are planning to release this year are very strong, starting this week with a major new product that we’re really excited about

In the meantime, I liked this little faked up ad – gives you a flavour doesnt it?

So much press today – with publications trying to out do themselves to get their predictions out there:

Happy Burns Day

250th anniversary BBC site

Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o the puddin’-race!
Aboon them a’ ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy of a grace
As lang’s my arm.

The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o need,
While thro your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.

His knife see rustic Labour dight,
An cut you up wi ready slight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like onie ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm-reekin, rich!

Then, horn for horn, they stretch an strive:
Deil tak the hindmost, on they drive,
Till a’ their weel-swall’d kytes belyve
Are bent like drums;
The auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
‘Bethankit’ hums.

Is there that owre his French ragout,
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad mak her spew
Wi perfect sconner,
Looks down wi sneering, scornfu view
On sic a dinner?

Poor devil! see him owre his trash,
As feckless as a wither’d rash,
His spindle shank a guid whip-lash,
His nieve a nit:
Thro bloody flood or field to dash,
O how unfit!

But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread,
Clap in his walie nieve a blade,
He’ll make it whissle;
An legs an arms, an heads will sned,
Like taps o thrissle.

Ye Pow’rs, wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies:
But, if ye wish her gratefu prayer,
Gie her a Haggis!

(Robert Burns: 1786)

Now IE 6 has to die

Published by elricb under Google, Web

Now that it has been revealed that an IE 6 vulnerability made the recent Chinese attack on Google and others possible. Can we now finally put this software to death, and quickly.

It is an abomination on a global scale and is simply not safe. A quick way to kill it off would be for Google to refuse requests from it, period.

UPDATE: Germany and France agree too! And now Australia.
